Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsAds buy speed. When a crew finishes a big exterior and the next three weeks are empty, search ads can fill the calendar faster than a ranking project ever will. They also cost money every time they run, so the aim is to spend where a ready buyer is searching and stop when the schedule is full. A painting company has several platforms to choose from, and each fits a different kind of buyer.
This page gives a painting company an overview of those platforms, which to try first, which to add later and how to avoid wasting spend on clicks from people who will never hire you. Management fees are listed below, and ad spend is separate and paid directly to the platforms.
The platforms
| Platform | What it does for a painter | Best for | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Ads search | Shows your ad when someone types a painting search | Ready-to-hire interior, exterior and cabinet buyers | Clicks cost money even when the caller is a tire kicker |
| Local Services Ads | A Google ad format that appears above regular ads for eligible trades, with verification and pay-per-lead pricing in many areas | Homeowners who want a screened local business | Availability varies by category and area, and verification takes effort |
| Microsoft (Bing) Ads | Search ads on Bing and partner sites | An older audience and homeowners who use the default browser | Smaller volume than Google |
| Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) | Visual ads and retargeting to people who may not be searching yet | Cabinet and exterior transformations, seasonal offers, past-visitor reminders | Interest is not intent, so leads need follow-up |
| ChatGPT ads | Ads inside a chat assistant | An early channel worth only a small, measured test | Still new, so measurement and targeting are limited |
Order of operations
For most residential painting company owners, the first campaign is a tightly built Google Ads search campaign for the main services in the towns where crews will actually go. It captures people who are typing a need. If Local Services Ads are available for painters in your area, they are worth investigating because Google puts them at the top and the pay-per-lead model fits some budgets. Read the eligibility and verification rules before applying.
Bing is a low-cost second step. It often has less competition and a different audience. Add it once Google is running well.
Meta Ads come into play when you need to build demand ahead of a busy season, promote cabinet and exterior transformations visually or follow up with visitors who did not call. It is not a replacement for search. It supports it.
A chat assistant ad test belongs at the bottom of the list. If you try it, keep the spend small, define what you will measure and treat any results as experimental.
Seasonal planning
Exterior ramp-up
As the weather warms, exterior searches rise. Launch exterior campaigns before your crews are fully booked so the pipeline is ready.
Exterior and commercial
Exterior work peaks in many regions. Property managers also schedule turnover and common-area work. Watch capacity so you do not buy leads you cannot serve.
Last exterior push
Homeowners rush to finish before the weather turns. Tighten geography and scheduling messages.
Interiors and cabinets
Shift budget to interior repaints, kitchen cabinets and trim packages that can be done in cold weather.
Deadline work
People want rooms done before guests arrive. Use clear availability messaging.
Starting out
Decide how many estimates a week your estimator can run and how many jobs your crews can start. Ads should feed that, not exceed it.
Separate interior, exterior and cabinet campaigns so budgets and messages can be adjusted independently.
Use call tracking and form tracking, and log how many became booked estimates and signed jobs.
Add negative keywords for do-it-yourself, rentals, jobs and training searches. Review the search terms regularly.
Add a second platform after the first is producing estimates you can trace to signed work.
Mistakes
A painting company often wastes money on searches from people looking for a job, a paint color, a DIY tutorial or a product. They also advertise to towns too far away to serve profitably, run ads when no one is available to answer the phone and send visitors to the home page instead of a page about the service they searched for.
Another leak is mixing very different jobs in one campaign. A person searching for a single room repaint is not the same as an owner who wants cabinets refinished or an association seeking a bid. Treat them separately.
Finally, remember that lead-safe work rules apply to older homes. Make sure ad copy does not promise anything your crew cannot do compliantly, and that your landing page states your certifications where relevant.
Match job to channel
| Work | First channel | Second channel | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single rooms and whole interiors | Google search ads | Local Services Ads where offered, then Meta retargeting | The buyer is searching and wants a quick visit |
| Exterior repaints | Google search ads, started before the season | Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) for neighborhoods near finished jobs | Exterior decisions are researched and seasonal |
| Cabinets | Meta Ads with a gallery, plus a cabinet search campaign | Retargeting with reviews | People need to see the transformation to decide |
| Pre-sale refreshes | Search ads on listing-related phrases and direct outreach to agents | Bing | Speed and reliability sell the job |
| Commercial and property | A small search campaign and relationship outreach | Meta aimed at local business owners | Bids matter more than clicks |
| Specialty work | Search ads for the specific service | Content pages that capture research | Fewer competitors, narrower demand |
Capacity
The fastest way for a painting company to ruin a good ad account is to bring in more work than the crews can start. A painting company that sets a rough monthly estimate target, then books a start date three weeks out, can lose a lead to a competitor who answers faster. Worse, rushed scheduling leads to sloppy prep and bad reviews, which cost more than any ad.
Before a campaign launches, a painting company should decide how many estimates your estimator can walk, how long before a signed job can start and how far you will travel. Build those limits into the campaign: tighter geography when crews are busy, lower budgets in the weeks you are full, wider reach when a gap opens. Share the production calendar with us monthly so ad spend moves with it.
It also helps to decide which jobs you want to say no to. If you do not paint single accent walls or do not do work under a minimum size, the ads and the landing page can say so, which filters the callers before the phone rings.
Working with the platforms
Measurement
Calls from ads, form submissions and booked estimates are counted from the start so you can tell what works.
Compliance
Ad platforms have rules about claims, before-and-after images and anything involving personal attributes. We read them when we build.
Local ads
Programs such as Local Services Ads ask for license, insurance and background checks where they apply. Gather documents early.
Conversion
Each campaign sends traffic to a page about that service, not to a general home page.
Accountability
Monthly reports connect spend to calls, estimates and jobs signed, in language you can read.
Setting expectations
Ads can put a painting company in front of someone at the moment they decide to hire. They cannot make a weak website persuasive, fix slow phone handling or turn an unfair quote into a signed one. Many owners who say that ads did not work for them had a landing page that said nothing about their work, a phone that rang through to voicemail or a service area so wide that most calls were out of range. Fix those problems first and the same budget goes much further.
Ads also reward specificity. A painting company that advertises cabinet refinishing in two towns, with a page that shows its process and a gallery, speaks to a narrower and better audience than one that advertises painting in general. A narrower message often means fewer clicks and more useful calls.
Pay attention to timing. Seasonal swings in the trade are strong, and a campaign that works in April may be wasteful in January. Plan to adjust throughout the year, and be prepared to pause campaigns when your calendar is full. A painting company that treats ads as a tap it can open and close, instead of a pipe that is always running, spends less and wastes fewer leads.
When you are ready to start, we can build a small test, measure it honestly and expand only if the numbers justify it. The test should be judged on estimates booked and jobs signed, not on clicks or impressions.
Management fees
Paid ads questions
Our management fee is $895 a month for one platform, $1,595 for two and $2,295 for three, with no setup fee or contract. Ad spend is separate and goes directly to the platform. You decide the budget.
Usually Google search, because it reaches people already looking for a painter. Local Services Ads may be worth exploring if available for your area.
Yes. Ads can be paused or scheduled to match your capacity. Month to month billing means you are never locked in.
For transformation-heavy jobs like cabinets and exteriors, Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) can build awareness and retarget visitors. They work alongside search, not instead of it.
They are an early channel. A small, measured test is reasonable. Do not move your main budget there yet.
We track calls, forms and booked estimates, and compare them with signed work. Impressions alone are not a result.
